What do you say or do to support a new mom who mig What do you say or do to support a new mom who might be struggling? ⁣
⁣
This is a common question!⁣
⁣
There are many ways to show support; the keys are to be sensitive and compassionate toward how she might be feeling. ⁣
⁣
I don’t recommend giving advice (unless she asks) or using common phrases that can feel dismissive like “Try to enjoy every moment” or “It goes by so fast.”⁣
⁣
If she’s struggling, she is probably ashamed she isn’t enjoying it like she wants to. And the days feel really long when she isn’t feeling like herself. ⁣
⁣
✨ What to say or do instead?⁣
⁣
1️⃣ Ask compassionate questions to show that you really care about her well-being ⁣
2️⃣ Validate first- meet her where she’s at and help her to feel seen, heard and understood.⁣
3️⃣ Then encourage- even a simple phrase can lift her spirit.⁣
4️⃣ Offer practical help- a little goes a long way. ⁣
⁣
Hint: These ideas are helpful for any new mom! ⁣
⁣
Chime in! 🗣⁣
If you struggled during postpartum, what is something that someone said or did that really helped you?

How do you survive sleep deprivation with a newbor How do you survive sleep deprivation with a newborn?!

Lack of sleep has been shown to have a direct affect on cognition in the general population. ⁣
⁣
It also increases stress levels and feelings of depression and anxiety. ⁣
⁣
So what about postpartum mommas?⁣
⁣
When you combine sleep deprivation with shifting hormones, it’s no wonder 1 in 5 moms has some type of perinatal mood disorder. ⁣
⁣
Mental health therapists who work with new mommas often address how she’s sleeping first. ⁣
⁣
There’s just no way around it!⁣
⁣
The best way to get through it is with HELP. ⁣
⁣
This is when a support network, ideally planned ahead of time, is key. ⁣
⁣
Support persons can help by taking a shift at night so you can sleep. Or holding the baby while you take a day time nap. ⁣
⁣
But there’s so much more! ⁣
⁣
A support network can help with practical needs so new parents are freed up to sleep/rest when they have the opportunity.⁣
⁣
This can look like:⁣
•setting up a meal train or bringing a meal⁣
•dropping off homemade treats or a care package for mom at the door⁣
•telling mom, “I’m going through the drive-thru, running to the store, etc. I’ll be dropping off some groceries and a coffee at your door.”⁣
•helping with household tasks like dishes & laundry⁣
•helping occupy older siblings, helping with school drop off or pick up⁣
⁣
But here’s the thing, mommas! We have to be willing to ACCEPT the help.⁣
⁣
✨Sometimes the biggest struggle is knowing what we need and how to communicate that.✨⁣
⁣
My free 5 Day Challenge to Transform Your Postpartum can help you with that. Check it out at the link in my bio!

How you care for your body during postpartum can h How you care for your body during postpartum can have a big impact on your mental health.⁣
⁣
1. Nourishment is QUEEN 👸 when it comes to postpartum mental health. We can see symptoms like anxiety and depression if our body isn’t receiving enough nourishment for all the demanding tasks during postpartum (healing, caring for a newborn). What’s more- specific nutrients are depleted by the time postpartum occurs. We must intentionally replenish them in order for everything else to function. These nutrients are things like vitamins A, B & D, magnesium, omega 3 fatty acids and more.⁣
⁣
2. Our body puts a high priority on blood sugar being stable to keep us alive. Postpartum can make this job hard because of the stressful demands, tendency to forget to eat, sleep deprivation, etc. Where blood sugar goes with highs and lows, mood follows. 🎢⁣
⁣
3. When stress is high, we have to intentionally support our body and decrease those stress signals over time. Otherwise, sustained stress signals can lead to symptoms like anxiety and depression. 📈⁣
⁣
4. Sleep is one of the greatest challenges postpartum. 😴 A support system is key for helping new parents get enough sleep to be able to function and have a stable mood. *This topic is so important that I’ll be talking more about it specifically in an upcoming reel. ⁣
⁣
So what can you do to support yourself or someone you love who is a new parent in these 4 ways? ⁣
⁣
I’ll be answering that question tomorrow!⁣
⁣
If you think you’d like some guidance on support strategies for postpartum, my PEACE Method is designed to do exactly that. Send me a DM & we can chat about whether PEACE Method coaching may be right for you!⁣
Did you know that mental health challenges for exp Did you know that mental health challenges for expecting & new moms can show up in a variety of ways?⁣
⁣
The term PMAD tries to encompass this by pointing out that:⁣
* Symptoms can show up during pregnancy too, not just postpartum.⁣
* Symptoms can vary from depression and general anxiety to more rare cases like psychosis (losing touch with reality).⁣
* These symptoms are noticeable enough to interfere with daily life.⁣
⁣
It’s important to know that:⁣
* These disorders don’t discriminate; they can affect anyone (yes, even dads!)⁣
* These disorders can appear anytime during pregnancy or up to 12 months postpartum.⁣
* These symptoms can continue for years past the perinatal period if untreated.⁣
⁣
The good news is:⁣
* It’s never too late to reach out for help.⁣
* Even if symptoms are mild, support can make a huge difference.⁣
* It’s not your fault if you’re struggling. ⁣
⁣
REMINDER: Being a great mom isn’t limited to those who don’t have mood challenges. Being willing to reach out for support if you need it makes a great mom too. 💜⁣

It’s World Maternal Mental Health Day 💕

Did you know that disorders like postpartum depression and postpartum anxiety are the #1 complication of childbirth?

They can show up anytime within 12 months of giving birth.

As many as 1 in 5 women will experience a mental health challenge to some degree while postpartum.

I experienced PPD and PPA after my first baby. I felt so alone. And it was so very hard.

But there is hope!

If you think you might be 1 in 5, DM me to chat about 1:1 support. I’ve got 2 spots open.

Peace is represented as shoes in the armor of God: Peace is represented as shoes in the armor of God:⁣
⁣
“For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared.” Ephesians‬ ‭6:15‬ ‭NLT‬‬⁣
⁣
Shoes are a picture of mobility. 👟⁣
⁣
Their purpose is to help us accomplish a task or get to our destination. 🛣⁣
⁣
Peace isn’t meant to be limited to a state of mind or being. ⁣
⁣
True peace is MOBILIZING. It changes how we live. ⁣
⁣
When we put on peace, we are prepared for whatever comes our way. 💪⁣
⁣
We’re not relying on circumstances to allow us to feel peaceful. ⁣
⁣
Instead peace enables us to move through the day with an assurance of the Good News- that we are loved and through Jesus, we can have abundant life. 🌱⁣
⁣
You can learn how to walk in mobilizing peace during your birth and postpartum journey through PEACE Method coaching. ⁣
