So you think you may have PPD/PPA… now what? 🤔

Here’s what you need to know from the get-go:

1️⃣ Take a holistic approach

You want to address what’s going on physically, mentally/emotionally and spiritually to really move the dial and see change. 

2️⃣ Make the choice to prioritize yourself

Postpartum is a very demanding time. We can be so engrossed in caring for our babies and navigating the challenges of postpartum that we forget or feel like we don’t have the capacity to care for ourselves. 

Making our well-being a priority isn’t easy, but it’s so worth it. When mom is taken care of, the whole family benefits. 

3️⃣ Learn to lean into discomfort

The healing journey can be difficult. Facing disappointment, grieving loss, working through trauma, changing habits and forming a new way of thinking isn’t for the faint of heart!

But if you’ll lean into the discomfort and trust the process, you’ll be amazed at how strong and resilient you are on the other side!

4️⃣ Decide to view it as an opportunity

It’s SO unfair that some of us have to navigate mental health challenges while postpartum.😞

But so much changes when we start to see it as an opportunity to grow. We stop being the victim and start to get our power back.

How do I know if I have the baby blues or ppd/ppa? 🧐

Postpartum depression and anxiety have a wide range of symptoms (see the second slide above). You may only experience a few though. 💜

These symptoms are usually more pronounced. And they interfere with daily life.

The good news is: with the right kind of support, you can feel better! 🙌

What is the right kind of support? 

One that addresses all aspects- mind, body and spirit- from a postpartum perspective.

When it comes to handling the baby blues, here are When it comes to handling the baby blues, here are a couple tips to remember:

1️⃣ Expect that you might feel some ups and downs, and this is normal as hormones are rapidly shifting. Having appropriate expectations will help you be patient with yourself. 

2️⃣ Communicate with a support person about how you’re feeling. Knowing you’re not alone can make it easier to ride out the baby blues. 

3️⃣ Observe the feelings. The freedom to just be aware of how you’re feeling and observe those feelings as they come and go is powerful. They aren’t a problem; you don’t have to fix them! Simply giving your feelings recognition and holding space for them is a solid start. 

4️⃣ Meet yourself with compassion. Just as you would answer your child with compassion if they came to you with a scraped knee, you can learn to respond to your own feelings with compassion.

Here’s an example- I’m 1 week postpartum, tired, and under stress trying to get the baby down for a nap. My oldest bursts into the room and startles the baby awake. I scold her out of my frustration. 

Instead of shaming myself and thinking I’m a bad mom, I can recognize- “Wow. I’m feeling a lot of tension about getting the baby to sleep. I’m also really tired. I know I need to apologize to my child. But my mistake doesn’t make me a bad mom. I can have grace for myself and remember that I’m a good mom who is just tired and under a lot of pressure right now.”

One of the most common question moms ask me is:

How do I know if I have the baby blues or ppd/ppa? 

The baby blues are feelings of sadness, overwhelm and mood swings that are considered normal during the first 2-3 weeks postpartum. They go away on their own. 

Up to 80% of moms experience them to some degree.

These feelings are common in response to all the rapid hormone changes taking place.

Don’t sweat them! Observe them with compassion. And be patient with yourself.

I’m Stefanie Overstreet, a nurse and nutritional therapy practitioner for postpartum moms. 

I’ve been married to @chrispauloverstreet the founder of @compassiontoaction for almost 14 years. And we have two wonderful girls, Brielle and Jubilee.

Some of my favorite things are going for walks, conversation with friends, cooking/baking, curling up with a good cup of coffee and a book, and attending a weekly Bible study where I’m continually challenged to grow in my faith.

As a teenager, I knew I wanted to become a registered nurse. I’ve always loved helping people. ❤️‍🩹

Now I’ve been an RN for almost 15 years. I started out in pediatric and maternity nursing.

My passion became helping postpartum women after I had a rough bout with postpartum depression and anxiety after I had my first baby 7 years ago. I realized what a gap there is in caring for women after they give birth.

I became a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner 3 years ago to add to my training because I learned firsthand the need for holistic care for postpartum women. 

Now I help women learn how to have postpartum experiences that are filled with peace, redemption and God’s presence. 

It’s such a privilege to see moms go from feeling:
